Dealing with Stains: What to Do When Your Cardigan Meets Tea, Wine, or Chocolate

Dealing with Stains: What to Do When Your Cardigan Meets Tea, Wine, or Chocolate

We’ve all been there – one minute you’re enjoying a cuppa, the next your favourite cardi has a front-row seat to the spill. Don’t panic! Most stains can be tackled with a little know-how and a gentle touch. Here’s how to rescue your cardi from the usual suspects without ruining the knit.

Tea or Coffee

Step 1: Blot, don’t rub! Use a clean cloth or paper towel to gently dab the stain and soak up as much liquid as possible.

Step 2: Mix cold water with a few drops of gentle detergent and dab the stain with a cloth. Rinse the spot carefully and repeat if needed.

Step 3: Let it air dry flat – never scrub or apply heat, as that can set the stain.

Red Wine

Step 1: Sprinkle salt on the stain immediately – it helps absorb the liquid.

Step 2: Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric (pushing the stain out rather than in).

Step 3: Apply a gentle mix of white vinegar and water (1:2 ratio), then blot with a cloth. Rinse, then lay flat to dry.

Chocolate

Step 1: Gently scrape off any excess chocolate with a spoon (careful not to stretch the knit).

Step 2: Dab with cold water and mild detergent. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse and blot. If it lingers, repeat once more before drying.

Final Tips 💡

  • Always test any stain-removal solution on a small hidden area first.

  • Avoid hot water – it can set stains into natural fibres.

  • Be gentle! Knitwear doesn’t like scrubbing.
